Reading of survival hacks for coffee cans is pretty amusing because, to most of us, they are merely designed for drinking. Yes, they may be, but we can always find our ways to pass all restrictions as preppers. Let us look at six uses of coffee cans when SHTF.
6 Survival Hacks for Coffee Cans
Survival Kit
Plastic or metal coffee cans would make an excellent container for a survival toolkit. Items to include in your kit are multi-tool, fire making kit, a poncho & other essential items that may come in handy in an SHTF scenario. The use of coffee cans as survival kits will help to cut down on prepping costs. Remember that cutting costs is also your aim as a prepper.
First-aid Toolkit
A plastic or metal coffee can will also work very well as a first-aid toolkit. All you have to do is throw in essential items to have in a first-aid box for you & your family. Again, this is a great avenue to save money and do something else.
An Organizer For Your Supplies
An empty coffee can (with its lid intact) can also be used to organize your items on a camping or hunting trip. I am not saying that this is the only gear container that you pack, but if you have to move tools from your campsite to a nearby area, you can just use the can to pack a few necessary equipment. You should, of course, have up to 4 or 5 coffee cans for this purpose.
Water Container
I’m sure you know what I’m talking about here. Your used coffee can will help to fetch water from available water sources. It will also pass for a pot to use for boiling if necessary.
Homemade Heater
Apart from the fact that this is an easy, straightforward setup, it will save you a lot of money. Although it is a temporary aid, it can provide some extra heat inside your tent. This heater will work for approximately 15 – 18 minutes, without giving any odor as it burns.
Here’s what you need:
- One roll of toilet paper
- One metal coffee can
- Matches or lighter
- One container of rubbing alcohol (70%)
Steps:
- Take out the cardboard that’s in the middle of the toilet paper and fold it slightly. After that, put it in the coffee can.
- Soak the toilet paper thoroughly with the rubbing alcohol.
- Wait for a few minutes and light up the paper.
Note that you have to use lighter or matches to ignite the paper. This is because rubbing alcohol is highly flammable & may burn you if you hold it too close.
Moving Hot Coals
If you are moving from a campsite to another and will want to build a fire as soon as you get there, you could use a metal coffee can to move hot coals. That cuts out the entire process of starting the fire—great energy & time saver.
Concluding The Survival Hacks for Coffee Cans
There are several other survival hacks for coffee cans. Asides from the uses above, you can also use coffee cans for cooking, store leftover foods, hide valuables & wash small items. Suddenly, you do not have to throw away coffee cans after use. However, remember to clean after; do not litter your campsite when you’re done.
