Are you stocking up on some of the WORST survival foods?
Every prepper has good intentions when preparing their stockpile for an SHTF event. And, luckily, since survival foods are of key importance for survival, there are plenty of options to stock up on.
Unfortunately, preppers will come to find that there are some survival foods that you just shouldn’t put away for an emergency. Sure, on the outside they look like smart options. But, when it comes right down to it, these bad survival foods are merely taking up precious space in your food storage. And wasted space means wasted resources.
We’ve all put away survival foods that aren’t the smartest decision to keep. Heck, we’ve found a few items over the years that we’ve had to either eat or toss in the trash after knowing what we know now.
Knowledge is key – that’s why it’s important to know that…
These Are The Worst Survival Foods To Stock Up On!
Dry Goods In Original Packaging
Dried goods are often called the “perfect” survival foods. After all, they last forever and you never have to worry about them. Right?
Wrong.
Products such as sugar, corneal, flour, and rice come pre-packaged in bags and boxes. However, these are NOT ideal for stockpiling. That’s because most of these are not air-tight, and are therefore susceptible to bugs coming in and ruining the food.
For instance, flour weevils are famous for getting into dry goods, such as flour and pasta. Roaches (as well as other pests) are also attracted to bags (and the glue sealing them together) just as much as the contents.
Another fact that many people don’t realize is that flour expires. Over time, the flour goes rancid – however, this slow process moves faster when you leave the flour in the package it came in.
To help deflect all of these things, store your dry foods in 5-gallon buckets with airtight lids. In addition, wheat flour and white rice store better than their alternatives, since they contain less oil.
Canned Tomato Products
From the outside, cans of tomatoes (and tomato products) look like they’ll last for years and years. Unfortunately, this is not the case.
This is because, many times, the cans will eventually break down and leak (this likely due to the acidity in the tomatoes). And this often takes only months to occur. Therefore, these aren’t the ideal foods for a survival situation.
If you cans of tomatoes in your cupboard, make sure to rotate through your stock to avoid this from happening.
Oils In Bulk
Oils may be a staple in cooking and baking, but they’re not a great idea for food stockpiling. That’s because these oils will spoil (regardless of what people have told you). This makes sense, since vegetable oils and animal fats are organic, and so they will logically go rancid over time.
Another thing to take note of is that unopened oils are good for a couple years. However, once you open them, they tend to only stay good for a few months.
If you must stockpile oil, make sure to store small bottles of it. This will help you avoid waste later on.
