For a long while, I accidentally repeated a lie about an important piece of survival equipment…so now it’s time the truth about water filters comes out.
Now you might think what I’m about to admit is harmless, or even ludicrous to care about.
But it’s my reputation on the line here.
A number of years ago I discovered an amazing water filter. I’m sure you’ve heard of it before, it’s the LifeStraw.
Part of the reason I liked the LifeStraw so much was because it was lightweight, easy to use, and filtered 99.99% of bacteria out of water,
The other reason, or at least what I thought was a reason, was LifeStraw has supposedly won TIME Magazine’s Invention Of The Year Award.
Apparently, that’s a lie…
Better Than LifeStraw? – New Water Filter Shocks Preppers
Why Every Prepper Needs to Know the Truth about Water Filters
Now before anyone thinks I’m bashing LifeStraw, I’m not.
I think they’re a great company with a great product (although I happen to like this new water filter better now). That, and they never claimed they’d won that award.
That’s just something I’d seen over and over again and assumed to be true.
What they did win was a TIME Magazine Innovation Of The Year Award.
Not, an invention.
Like I said, some of you might think that’s a silly thing to get upset about. But I don’t think so. It’s like the difference between winning a Gold Medal at the Olympics or no medal at all.
So I’ve got to come clean about that.
Now that I’ve come clean on that issue, I want to talk about another truth about water filters.
As you know, some water filters are better than others. That’s just the way it is.
LifeStraw is definitely one of the better ones out there.
But they’ve also been around for a while, and they haven’t changed a lick since they were introduced. With that being true, I wanted to talk a bit more about what you really should look for when purchasing a water filter for yourself or others.
As well as share the new water filter I think you should get before the LifeStraw.
The Simple Checklists For Choosing A Water Filter
The truth about water filters and selecting the right one isn’t that complicated.
You just need to know a few things:
- Why are you buying it? Is this for backpacking, or camping, or just for survival?
- How many people are going to use it? Is this just for you, or will your whole famil use it too?
- How clean do you want your water to get?
- What are you prepared to spend?
Those are a few of the broader concepts you need to think long and hard about.
Let me break each down and show you how to make a good purchase.
Keep this at top of mind too. Some of you reading this might already own a water filter. That’s excellent, it means you’re prepared for a crisis.
However, I’m sure there are people in your life who don’t own one who would a). love to get this info, or, b). benefit from receiving a water filter as a gift.
So while you’re reading this thing about how friends and family would benefit from this info. They deserve to know the truth about water filters too.
Your Work is Cut Out For You. This Amazing NEW Water Filter Meets Every Survivalist Needs!
1-Why Are You Buying It? If you’re the kind of person who plans on going out into the wilderness several times a year for the rest of your life you might need a heavy duty water filter. These kinds of filters have replaceable cartridges, hook up directly to water bottles and hydration bladders, and can suck water out of hard to reach places.
If you’re looking for a water filter to help you survive a disaster and that’s it you just need something that’ll work. Most survival situations last 72 hours or 3 days. For many people, that means they’ll only need 3~4 gallons of water. If you want to be on the safe, get a water filter that will filter 6~9 months of water. The AquaStiq water filter does just that.
2- How Many People Are Going To Use It? If you get a water filter for a survival situation and it’s just you, realistically you need one that filters a few gallons. However, because most people will be with friends and family, and because survival situations might last longer than a few days, a filter that cleans 200+ gallons is a better choice.

3- How Clean Should Your Water Be? Here’s a truth about water filters most people don’t know. You don’t have to get rid of every single thing in the water to drink it. Of course, this depends largely on where you’re getting your water from.
If a nuclear bomb goes off and radiation fallout is everywhere then you’ll certainly need a more advanced filter to remove radioactive elements.
But if it’s just a boil alert, or you’re out in the wilderness and worried about drinking from a moving stream you only need to get rid of a few things. Typically a filter eliminating 99.9999% of waterborne bacteria including E-Coli and Salmonella and 99.9% of waterborne protozoan parasites including Giardia will do. If you want the extra protection, go for it. But you don’t necessarily need it to survive.
4 – What Can You Afford? Unless you’re made of money, it’s tough to bite the bullet and spend $200~$300 on advanced water purification. Even some of the middle road water filters cost close to $100. Fortunately, filters like the AquStiq only cost $20 and take care of everything in the list you see above.
The bottom line is you don’t have to have a crazy expensive water filter to get safe water.
