8 Survival Uses for Vicks Vapor Rub

Take Out Splinters

Splinters will likely be a painful reality for many preppers as they bug out in an emergency. Luckily, you can use Vicks vapor rub to remove them more painlessly. Place Vicks on and around the splinter. This will cause the skin to moisten, and allow the splinter to work itself out of your skin more easily.

Ease Earaches

Vicks is a pain reliever, meaning it works for more than just easing cold/flu symptoms. To ease an earache, put Vicks on one end of a cotton swab. Then trace the inside of the ear canal with the vapor rub. Don’t push the swab into the ear canal – this can push down earwax and harm you, rather than help you.

Repel Mosquitos

Don’t have insect repellant? You can use Vicks to help banish mosquitos and other bugs. That’s because its strong menthol odor will keep them at bay, saving you from those itchy bites. Lather the vapor rub onto your wrists, the back of your neck, and on parts of your clothes.

Good news: If you do get bitten, you can rub Vicks onto the bite to help it heal faster.

Treat Hemorrhoids

Many people swear by Vicks to help them heal their hemorrhoids. However, before utilizing the vapor rub for this use, you’ll want to make sure how well you can tolerate the burn. For instance, if you’re unable to tolerate it when Vicks is placed on other sensitive parts of your body, this method might be too much.

Also, keep in mind that this use is best for small hemorrhoids, as the menthol can help cool the itch. Large and problematic hemorrhoids should be treated using a different method.

Ease Bruising and Muscle Aches

In an SHTF situation, most everyone is going to be tired, sore and bruised. As such, Vicks can help replace traditional balms, such as Ben Gay, to help ease the pain. And if you’re older and prone to excessive soreness and fatigue, then you’ll likely especially benefit from this method.

Carry Vicks around and use it as a multi-use topical pain reliever.

Cure Toenail Fungus

Got toenail fungus? You can treat it with Vicks. Take small amounts of the vapor rub and place it on the toenail. Do this for 2-3 weeks in order to ensure the fungus completely dies off. For instance, once the yellow/green color turns to a black/blue color, you’ll know it’s dying off.

Treat Dry Scalp

Dandruff can be especially irritating – especially when it’s itching non-stop. Stop the itch in its tracks by rubbing a small amount of Vicks onto the dry portions of your scalp. Apply it before heading to bed, or right after showering.

Ease The Headache

Tension/congestion headaches? You can help clear those up with Vicks. Simply apply small amounts of the vapor rub to your temples and forehead. The menthol will work to penetrate the skin and relieve tension. It can also help open up airways to help ease the headache.
