10 Surprising Survival Uses For Salt
1 – Cure A Sinus Infection
Salt is awesome for clearing out nasal passages. Doing so can help you breathe easier, relieve congestion and sinus pressure, and help you get to feeling better faster.
Now, many people use a neti pot to aid them with this use. However, you may not have brought it with you in a survival situation. Luckily, with just a few simple ingredients you can make your own neti-pot and relieve that sinus pressure almost instantly. Watch the video below to learn more.
2 – Make Dinner Faster
Scaling a fish can be both time-consuming and frustrating. And, if you’ve caught a bunch and you’re already getting hungry, this process can seem like it takes forever.
To speed up the process, soak the fish in salt water before scaling. This mixture will loosen up the fish scales, making them much easier to remove.
3 – Prevent Mold
Here’s a cool thing – you can actually extend the life of certain foods by placing them in a salt water bath first. Soak things like cheese and other items that get moldy easily into the liquid. Then dry and wrap tightly in plastic wrap. Doing this will help stop mold from growing, thus keeping your food fresh for longer.
4 – Clean Your Teeth & Gums
Hygiene is going to be one of the first things to suffer when an emergency hits. That’s because we likely won’t have toothpaste, floss, or other hygienic essentials to help maintain cleanliness. That’s why it’s a great idea to do what you can by cleaning your teeth with items you already have on hand.
Combine salt, baking powder, and a little water to form a thick paste. Then use your toothbrush or a clean finger (depending on how desperate you are) and run the paste all over your teeth. This will help clean and polish them.
5 – Remove The Rust
There’s few things more disheartening than finding rust on your favorite bug out vehicle, knife, or other survival equipment. To help remove it, combine 6 Tbsp. salt with 2 Tbsp. lemon juice. Then douse a rag with the mixture and rub it over the rust to remove it. Make sure to dry the area completely once you’re done to keep the rust from spreading again.
6 – Keep The Milk Good
If you have the good fortune of having some milk in an SHTF situation, you’ll want it to last as long as possible. Sprinkle a little salt into the liquid, and this will increase the milk’s lifespan by a few days.
7 – Keep The Ants Out
Salt has the incredible ability of keeping pesky ants at bay, no matter where you are. Simply pour some salt on the ground where ants are found, and form it into a line. Ants hate crawling on salt, so this will create a barrier that they won’t want to cross. Lines of salt can be particularly useful around points of entry, such as around vents, under doorways, and around windows.
8 – Ease Bug Bites & Bee Stings
If you get stung by a bee or bitten by an insect, this can be really painful. Ease the pain and inflammation by making a paste out of water and a little salt. Apply it to the area, and you’ll start to feel better.
9 – Kill Poison Ivy
Poison ivy is all over the United States, so chances are you’ll find yourself needing this survival hack. Combine a gallon of soapy water with three pounds of salt. Then pour it (or use a sprayer if possible) all over the stems and leaves of the plant. This will kill it and keep you itch-free.
10 – Remove The Feathers
Anyone who owns a farm or has chickens can tell you – de-feathering a chicken is both frustrating and time-consuming. Thankfully, you can use salt to make it easier. Rub salt all over the chicken, and you’ll find that the pin feathers come out with much less effort.
**BONUS: Party Time**
Survival takes a lot out of you. So, if you have the ability, make yourself a margarita and salt the rim. This survival use is recommended for both SHTF situations AND everyday life.
