Most every prepper recognizes the importance of having a survival knife on them in a crisis. That’s because these weapons are seriously useful for a multitude of things.
For example, you can use a survival knife to cut wood for a fire, to sever cordage for tying things together, to help you build a shelter, and to help you hunt for game (and then skin it when you’re done). You can also use this valuable survival tool as a defense weapon against your attacker.
These are all very good and valuable reasons to have a survival knife with you in a crisis. However, most preppers stop there. They don’t realize they can use their knife for far more than just the uses shown above.

5 Unconventional Ways To Use Your Survival Knife
Tenderize Meat
Hunting is often necessary for survival, but people underestimate how much benefit a hearty, delicious meal can have on the soul – especially in an SHTF situation.
To help make meat extra delicious, you can tenderize it using the butt (aka the pommel) of the knife.
This is a great way to use the resources you have on hand to improve your situation.
Get a Blazing Fire Going
You may feel hopeless if you end up in a situation where you need to get warm but don’t have a fire starter. However, if you’ve got a survival knife, you can still make it work.
First, use the knife to collect wood and kindling. Then, strike the blade of your survival knife against a rock in order to send out sparks. This may take a few tries, but eventually the sparks will nestle into the kindling, and will begin to burn.
A survival knife can also be a crucial tool in building a bow drill – a device used to start fires. Check out the video below to learn how you can use this handy tool to get roaring flames in minutes.
Signal Your Search Party
If you’ve got people looking for you (or you just hope you do), you can use the high-gloss blade of a survival knife to get the attention of passing planes, boats, etc.
Use the sun and the blade’s reflective surface to create an SOS signal to help you get rescued.
New to this? Here’s a video that shows you how to use an SOS signal to your advantage.
Gather Water
If trees are anywhere around you in a survival situation, you can use this to your advantage to help you get water. Watch the video below to learn how to use your trusty survival knife to help you stay hydrated in a crisis.
Build What You Need
So often we pack up all the resources and tools we have on hand, and we set off on our bug out adventure. However, more often than not, we get out there and realize we need a tool we either didn’t think to bring or never had to begin with.
Rather than waste time beating yourself up about it, consider building whatever you need yourself. It’s truly amazing the inventions you can create with a survival knife and some creativity.
For instance, you may need a self-defense weapon, or another tool to aid you in the hunting process. If this is the case, one tool you can craft is a survival spear.
