Border Crisis: Republicans Move To Impeach DHS Sec. Mayorkas

( – Following a week of chaotic and record-breaking illegal immigration activity at the southern border, calls among House Republicans to start impeachment proceedings against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas have gotten louder.

The House Judiciary Committee, the body in charge of conducting impeachments, has received support from its members.

Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) told reporters Tuesday, “he should be impeached as soon as humanly possible.”

According to reports, Rep. Ben Cline (R-VA) said, “I support starting the impeachment hearings. I told Chairman [Jim] Jordan that. My constituents believe it is a long time, and I believe it will happen if the facts are presented to the American people and my House colleagues.”

In a statement, Rep. Barry Moore (R-AL) said that “Mayorkas had done more to aid drug cartels and child smugglers than he had the American people. He must be impeached because it is obvious that he is breaking the law on purpose.”

The calls follow the Biden administration’s lifting of Title 42 border protection last week, after border officials apprehended over 10,000 illegal immigrants daily for at least two days in a row, the most significant daily totals ever seen, according to Fox News.

Without counting an estimated 1.5 million runaways, authorities have detained more than five million illegal immigrants at the southern border under Mayorkas’ administration.

Mayorkas told CNN over the weekend that he was not concerned by calls for his impeachment and that he was “focused on the work ahead of us.” He said, “Throughout my tenure, I will keep [DHS’s] efforts front and center.”

Longtime border hawk Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) is attempting to get support for the articles of impeachment he submitted in February against the Secretary.

Rep. Mark Green (R-TX), chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, is anticipated to carry on with a “fact-finding mission” about border failures that, according to his spokeswoman, may ultimately serve as the investigative basis for the Judiciary Committee’s potential pursuit of voting on impeachment articles.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) told Breitbart News on Friday that he supported Mayorkas’ impeachment, which may be the strongest indication of conference-wide interest in doing so.

At a news conference on Tuesday, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was less blunt, saying that he has a “constitutional point of view” on impeachment but reiterating that he had previously called for Mayorkas to go because the Secretary had “failed at his job.”

Another Republican on the Judiciary Committee who would vote to remove Secretary Mayorkas from office, Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, told Breitbart News that he thought the Secretary could be fired for a “willful non-enforcement of our border.”

Massie said, “You can’t believe that somebody is that awful at their job.”
