(ConcernedPatriot.com) – Around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, at least 22 individuals were shot, one of whom died, at a Juneteenth celebration in Illinois, a state with strict gun laws.
According to CNN, the incident occurred “in a parking lot in Willowbrook, about 21 miles west of Chicago.”
Two of the injured are still in critical condition, according to FOX 32.
DuPage County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Eric Swanson said deputies were responding after hearing gunshots while on patrol near the parking lot.
“This incident’s motive is unclear, and the investigation is still ongoing,” stated Swanson.
No information has been made public on how many shooters were engaged in the shooting.
Among other restrictions, Illinois has a red flag law, a ban on “assault weapons,” a ban on “high capacity” magazines, a 72-hour waiting period, and a need for gun owners to get licenses via the Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card system.
What is Juneteenth?
In 1865, federal forces arrived in Galveston, Texas, to seize control of the territory and guarantee the freedom of all enslaved people, known as Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”).
The troops finally arrived two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. The longest-running African American celebration, Juneteenth celebrates the abolition of slavery in the US.
The date was officially declared a federal holiday on June 17, 2021. The date of Juneteenth in 2023 is Monday, June 19.
