‘All Allies Agree’ Ukraine Will Join NATO

(ConcernedPatriot.com) – NATO restates its commitment to Ukraine for the long run and states that all its members agree that the country will join the alliance—but only after it has undergone reform and not while the conflict is still raging.

Despite prior opposition from other alliance members, Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Jens Stoltenberg reiterated that Ukraine’s membership is a given as he discussed the upcoming NATO-Ukraine Council meeting this week.

“Allies agree that Ukraine will join NATO,” Stoltenberg stated, adding that this week’s talks would center on “priority reforms” that the nation must implement to be eligible to join the alliance.

The air defense coalition, billions in fresh money, and the inauguration of the F-16 training center in Romania for Ukrainian pilots are just a few examples of the recent direct support for Ukraine mentioned by the Norwegian politician who is now leading the alliance.

While Stoltenberg was adamant that Ukraine would join NATO and be subject to the Article 5 provisions, which force all members to go to war if any of them is attacked in Europe or North America, he also made it plain that this would be subject to some significant adjustments.

In addition to reforms for Ukraine, he stated that the country would need to stop being at war for there to be “full interoperability between Ukrainian forces and NATO forces… based on NATO doctrines and training procedures.”

“All Allies agree that in the midst of a war, full membership is not possible,” he told the reporters at a morning briefing. “Naturally, we will keep investigating ways to bring Ukraine and NATO closer together.”

Though earlier claims that all allies had approved the move have been criticized, the comments about Ukraine joining NATO are not the first of its kind.

According to reports, Victor Orban of Hungary wrote back to Stoltenberg in April, saying, “What!?” he had a particular interest in preventing the conflict from spreading farther into Europe because Hungary was close to it.

Stoltenberg had written, “All NATO allies have agreed that Ukraine will become a NATO member.”

Olaf Scholz, the chancellor of Germany, recently warned against hastily rushing Ukraine into the alliance, stating that after the conflict is over and Ukraine has access to Western-made weaponry, it will be appropriate to discuss security assurances.

As for NATO, he claimed that it is “far from” being prepared for Ukraine to become a member at this time, adding that “NATO’s criteria include a whole series of conditions that Ukraine cannot currently meet” and that 2023 was the time to “concentrate on what is coming up.”

NATO is not the only organization eager to help Ukraine move toward Europe without formally committing to it.

Similar opinions are expressed regarding Ukraine’s decision to join the European Union. Senior European leaders have described this decision as inevitable.

Still, they have also stated that it won’t be made until after the war is over and Ukraine has resolved its issues with lobbying, oligarchs, corruption, and minority rights.
